A Mindful Approach to Imago Relationship Therapy

Imago Relationship Therapy works on two distinct levels: First, you will learn the Imago Dialogue—a clear, structured method that helps you communicate with greater effectiveness, compassion, and ease. This skill alone allows you to break painful, repetitive cycles of criticism and defensiveness. The second level of work is to gain greater understanding and compassion for the specific patterns of conflict that arise.  Most couples have just a few “core” issues, but they come up over and over again. Our job is to help you understand these conflicts and uncover the deeper vulnerabilities beneath your frustrations—such as the universal desires to feel seen, heard, appreciated, and loved.

Bringing in Mindful Awareness techniques adds yet another layer to this work.  As we learn to be more aware of what we are feeling and experiencing in the present moment, we are better able to “witness” our emotional reactions, and learn to explore and investigate them rather than just having them take over.  As we learn to better observe our own reactions, we can respond in more healthy ways to our partner, and begin to create more positive cycles of interaction.Together, we learn to "water the seeds" of love and compassion, rather than anger, hurt, and fear.

Imago approaches problems on all levels: emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and spiritual (not religious–spiritual) levels. We find that a deep understanding of each other’s feelings and experiences is crucial to being able to empathize with each other. We also recognize that we often need to change our behaviors to give and get what we really want.

Research has found online counseling to be as effective as in-person sessions and many couples prefer the convenience. Online sessions via Zoom are available for couples residing anywhere in California or Colorado.

In-Person

If you prefer to meet in-person, sessions are available in Carlsbad/ San Diego, California.
